Email Excerpts from an Evil Doctor

Via emails to me, here are some of Diane's excerpted comments concerning the conceptual framework of our project:

..."you might want to think about praxis (practice grounded in theory and informed by classroom experience)."

"Yes, what you and Jessica are doing certainly falls more in line with praxis. Pragmatism is either a particular philosophical bend or it gets bastardized in terms of 'cookbook curriculum' (throwing a bunch of (stuff) together to hope it works in a classroom). I really think the two of you are working through a system of praxis related to how technology works with a particular group of writers."

So where does pragmatism and praxis diverge? I had the notion that pragmtism combines theory with practice to construct knowledge. And so does praxis, right?

Is it accurate to say that pragmatism invovles a participant using action to drive theory and praxis involves a participant using theory to drive practice?

Pragmatism is a particular branch of philosophy that was driven by C.S. Peirce and William James and John Dewey, which argues for practical consequences to be vital components of truth and meaning.

I certainly see that part of the philosophy in what you and Jessica are proposing. Think of pragmatism as more an idea.

Praxis takes theory (any theory...in my case, postmodernism and cultural studies) and blends it with practice.

So you have the praxis part absolutely spot on!

Perhaps revise the pragmatism part as being a participant using real consequences and real meaning as a way to drive theory...you might be a bit closer to what pragmatism is.

Am I confusing you? Hope not!

I think this all makes sense and I have a book from my 800 paper that may help us.

Thanks for the clarification. I have a better understanding now.
